Summary

An Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling series。

Kate Marshall’s investigation into a journalist’s disappearance sends her down an unexpectedly twisted path in a riveting thriller by the author of Shadow Sands。

Kate Marshall’s fledgling PI agency takes off when she and her partner, Tristan Harper, are hired for their first big case。 It’s a cold one。 Twelve years before, journalist Joanna Duncan disappeared after exposing a political scandal。 Most people have moved on。 Joanna’s mother refuses to let go。

When Kate and Tristan gain access to the original case files, they revisit the same suspects and follow the same leads―but not to the same dead ends。 Among Joanna’s personal effects, Kate discovers the names of two young men who also vanished without a trace。

As she connects the last days of three missing persons, Kate realizes that Joanna may have been onto something far more sinister than anyone first believed: the identity of a serial killer hiding in plain sight。 The closer Kate comes to finding him, the darker it’s going to get。

4。25。 I have read the author’s Det Erica Foster series and having thoroughly enjoyed them, started with the Kate Marshall series。 This is the 3rd book。 What I really like is how the story unfolds and keep you interested and moving along。 You have two likable main characters in Kate Marshall and her associate Tristan。 They are part of a start up detective agency and prove to be competent and thorough in their investigations。 I love a finely tuned mystery to solve, and the book did not disappoint。 4。25。 I have read the author’s Det Erica Foster series and having thoroughly enjoyed them, started with the Kate Marshall series。 This is the 3rd book。 What I really like is how the story unfolds and keep you interested and moving along。 You have two likable main characters in Kate Marshall and her associate Tristan。 They are part of a start up detective agency and prove to be competent and thorough in their investigations。 I love a finely tuned mystery to solve, and the book did not disappoint。 I find myself having trouble putting down his books as I want to know who did it。 I look forward to the next installment in this series 。。。more

Love this seriesThe main characters continue to evolve。 They are friends now that I want to encourage。 Revealing the darkest side of human behavior while keeping the reader’s eye on hope and goodness is Bryndza’s special touch。

I have just finished reading Darkness Falls by Robert Bryndza, which is the third book in the Kate Marshall series。This is an Author that I have really enjoyed in the past, and have read the other two books in this series。This storyline starts off with Kate Marshall and her partner, Tristan Harper, who are starting off a Private Investigation agency, getting their first big case。For me I found this book a bit on the slow side, and overall, not quite the page turner as the past two。 I did however I have just finished reading Darkness Falls by Robert Bryndza, which is the third book in the Kate Marshall series。This is an Author that I have really enjoyed in the past, and have read the other two books in this series。This storyline starts off with Kate Marshall and her partner, Tristan Harper, who are starting off a Private Investigation agency, getting their first big case。For me I found this book a bit on the slow side, and overall, not quite the page turner as the past two。 I did however overall enjoy, it and felt that it could be read as a stand alone as well。Thank you to NetGalley, Author Robert Bryndza and Thomas & Mercer for my advanced copy to review#DarknessFalls #NetGalley 。。。more

I have been waiting for this book。 I loved the first two in this series and this one was worth waiting for。 There are a lot of characters and their interconnections are interesting。 Kate and Tristan are beginning to get a handle on their PI business - and the caravan park。 The cold case of a missing reporter sets them on a trail that leads to gay bars, Parliament, and the beach。 Great story! And the narration is, again, very well done。

No further details to avoid spoilers。 The novel is structured in a way that aside from following the investigation there is the occasional chapter from the killer’s point of view。 I felt that Robert Bryndza was very clever in dropping clues and the occasional red herring that kept me guessing up to the final reveal。I so enjoy this kind of crime thriller and my appreciation of Kate Marshall and company has grown over the three books to date。 Definitely a page-turner。 Indeed I read it in a single sitting。 Highly recommended。 4。5 stars rounded up to 5。 。。。more

And how are the missing men linked? Darkness Falls is the third book in the Kate Marshall series set in Devon, England, about a former police officer with a troubled past and her younger assistant Tristan, who are starting out as private investigators。 I’d enjoyed the previous two, although not as much as the author’s Erika Foster series, but found this one slow, predictable in terms of the reveal, and too far-fetched in terms of plot and character motivations。 You don’t need to have read the first two to get into this, as you get Darkness Falls is the third book in the Kate Marshall series set in Devon, England, about a former police officer with a troubled past and her younger assistant Tristan, who are starting out as private investigators。 I’d enjoyed the previous two, although not as much as the author’s Erika Foster series, but found this one slow, predictable in terms of the reveal, and too far-fetched in terms of plot and character motivations。 You don’t need to have read the first two to get into this, as you get enough recap of Kate’s past history for it to make sense。A few years after the events of Shadow Sands, Kate has quit her lecturing post at the university, inherited a house and caravan park from her friend Myra, and is getting her fledgling PI business started。 Her son Jake is now a student and has come home for the summer holidays, and Tristan is struggling financially, having reduced his hours at the university to focus on detecting, so they really need a big case to bring in some cash and publicity。 When the mother of a journalist who went missing twelve years earlier hires them to find out what happened to her, they find links to a number of cases of young gay men who just disappeared - have they identified yet another serial killer?I’m coming to the conclusion that this series is not for me - I don’t find Kate interesting or appealing as a character - the whole recovering alcoholic detective trope has been done to death - and while I like the semi-maternal dynamic with Tristan, all his insecurities got a bit tedious。 The plot involved a lot of minor characters, but this wasn’t enough to disguise the perpetrator’s identity, although I didn’t guess the whole reveal, probably because it didn’t make any kind of sense and relied too much on coincidence。 I found the pace to be too slow and the dialogue stilted; I’m steering clear of overly gruesome thrillers so appreciated the lack of gore。I requested this without paying enough attention to the blurb, else I might’ve skipped it - I was expecting a cold case mystery, which it is, but with a sexual predator case thrown in - I’m completely over detectives encountering serial killers in every book - especially when they live in small towns - it’s just too unlikely。 I also generally don’t enjoy scenes written from the POV of the murderer。 Most of my GR friends have given this 4 or 5 stars so it obviously isn’t a problem for most readers。 Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC; I am posting this honest review voluntarily。 Darkness Falls is available now。 。。。more

Darkness Falls is Book 3 in the Kate Marshall series from Robert Bryndza。"Kate is hired to find a journalist that has been missing for twelve years。 When Kate and her business partner, Tristan, review the case files, they discover leads that were never pursued by the original detectives。 They link the names to other missing men and soon discover the possibility of a serial killer that's been killing for a long time。 The closer they come to him, the darker it gets。"This is full-on crime fiction f Darkness Falls is Book 3 in the Kate Marshall series from Robert Bryndza。"Kate is hired to find a journalist that has been missing for twelve years。 When Kate and her business partner, Tristan, review the case files, they discover leads that were never pursued by the original detectives。 They link the names to other missing men and soon discover the possibility of a serial killer that's been killing for a long time。 The closer they come to him, the darker it gets。"This is full-on crime fiction from Bryndza。 The story builds slowly。 Lots of names and things happening。 But Brynda does something I like。 The detectives sit down and rehash where they are in the investigation。 It helps the reader make sense of all of the moving parts。 And helps my old memory keep up。 The killer was a surprise。 Bryndza does a good job disguising him。 You will guess one part easily。 This was my first book from the Kate Marshall series so I will be going back and reading the first two。 All of his books can be read as stand-alones。 They are great books for the beach。Some great crime fiction from Bryndza。 。。。more

I do enjoy this series, the more so now that Kate is starting to get into her stride as a private detective。 She’s by no means well off since giving up her lecturing job as a criminologist, so she’s combining running a caravan park in Devon – inherited from her AA sponsor, Myra – with her detective agency。 Her colleague, Tristan also has to continue to work in the University, but both are committed to making the agency work, whatever it takes。The pair are hired to work on a cold case by Bev Elli I do enjoy this series, the more so now that Kate is starting to get into her stride as a private detective。 She’s by no means well off since giving up her lecturing job as a criminologist, so she’s combining running a caravan park in Devon – inherited from her AA sponsor, Myra – with her detective agency。 Her colleague, Tristan also has to continue to work in the University, but both are committed to making the agency work, whatever it takes。The pair are hired to work on a cold case by Bev Ellis, the distraught mother of a missing journalist, Joanna Duncan。 Joanna’s been gone 12 years, but Bev, who knows she is more than likely dead, wants to be able to put her daughter to rest and achieve closure。 Joanna’s car was found abandoned in the multi-storey car park she used daily and the reader knows from the beginning that foul play was indeed involved。Now Bev’s partner Bill, a well off builder, has used his money and influence to get copies of the long inactive police files from the time and Joanna’s mum wants Kate to use these to find out what happened to her daughter。 It’s a case that pays well – and so Kate and Tristan have no hesitation in accepting。Bryndza’s ability to make his central characters incredibly empathetic and likeable immediately make you warm to both Kate and Tristan。 His facility to draw the reader quickly into a story and to invest them with a stake in the outcome is indicative of a writer who really understands his audience。 Part of the joy of this series is the interplay between Kate, her son Jake and Tristan。 They are each very different personalities but they are all warm and interesting people with independent lives and you can’t help but like them。 Kate and Tristan are a good team and this time Tristan contacts are very helpful in finding a way forward for the investigation。Of course their attention first focusses on the stories that Joanna was pursuing and a few promising leads look to be full of potential, but these dissipate until a discovery made by Kate opens up a new avenue of exploration。Robert Bryndza knows how to spin a good storyline and his mastery of the art of deception and misleading is excellent, so there are always surprises in store for his readers。 I actually worked out fairly early on who was responsible, but for me the surprise and tension still existed because I did not know why and what had led to a chain of events that culminated in Joanna’s murder, but also pointed to other deaths。Bryndza helps build tension by giving us chapters from the antagonists perspective。 So we as readers know how the killing is done and what happens to each victim。 This is a splendidly chilling way to help you realise the very real danger that Kate and Tristan are in, as well as upping the anteo on the urgency of stopping a terrible, brutal killer。Bryndza doesn’t overegg Kate’s past and her addiction issues, but he allows it to hover in the background, gently reminding us both of what she has been through and also of how easy it would be for her to regress in times of stress。The sense of place is fabulous, too with lovely coastal and rural settings all perfect for hiding bodies and of course a large patch for a thinly stretched police team who are not slow to demand that Kate hands over all her information when it seems that she has uncovered information from their files that their teams missed altogether。Verdict: Great sense of place, rich and warm characterisation and some lovely twisty plot points all combine to make this a riveting and enthralling read。 This is a great series that makes you want to race through every chapter ‘til you get to the truth。 。。。more

As the PI agency isn't flooding with clients, Kate and Tristan are able to focus on a single cold case, that of a journalist that went missing twelve years ago after exposing a political scandal。 No corpse was ever found nor her car, and the few existing clues were investigated years ago and abandoned as dead ends。 But the victim's mother hasn't forgotten and wants to know what happened to her daughter, so the detectives start tracking the old suspects and witnesses and their movements on the da As the PI agency isn't flooding with clients, Kate and Tristan are able to focus on a single cold case, that of a journalist that went missing twelve years ago after exposing a political scandal。 No corpse was ever found nor her car, and the few existing clues were investigated years ago and abandoned as dead ends。 But the victim's mother hasn't forgotten and wants to know what happened to her daughter, so the detectives start tracking the old suspects and witnesses and their movements on the day of the disappearance, trying to discover any new lead, anything explaining what really happened to Joanna Duncan, even if many would really prefer to leave the past in the past and the most popular hypothesis seems to be she was abducted randomly by a lunatic。As with the previous instalment of the series, I enjoyed this one a great deal, especially how the author creates characters that not only are believable and have their own motivations but also are interesting to follow, and how the landscape is made part of the story, although in this book time plays a key role as well, because to have any chance of solving the mystery, the detectives need to make the past their own and reconstruct events long forgotten that, unearthed, may give a clue as to what happened to the journalist。I also appreciated how the focus was placed on character interactions and thoughts and the feelings the past awakens on them rather than on detailed descriptions of any crimes taking place。I'll definitely be continuing with the series!
